Artik's opening day at the Ashland Growers Market, May 11, 2010.

Artik's opening day at the Ashland Growers Market, May 11, 2010.

A big thanks to all of you who came to Artik Creamery’s first day in the Ashland Growers and Crafters Market. We’d love to hear from you–leave a comment on this blog (click on comments to the right). Tell us what your favorite flavor was and don’t forget you can always suggest a flavor too!

Of today’s four flavors Vanilla Fudge Brownie and the Toasted Coconut Non-Dairy may have been the most popular but it’s hard to say. Meyer Lemon was right up there too.

Today’s weather was a bit  brisk for May in the Rogue Valley. We could see snow on the Cascades and Siskiyous from our booth all day. The temp finally hit 50 at 1pm, just as we were closing up market for the day. We appreciate the many brave souls who bundled up, ordered a scoop, bowl, or pint and went on to prove that any kind of weather is ice cream weather. Thank you!

As soon as we finished taking down the booth, we headed back to Artik’s kitchen and began work on next week’s flavors. Check back here for the next flavor update of become a fan of our Facebook page where we also announce flavors.

We may also be at this weekend’s Phoenix Artisans and Growers Market, a brand new market on the south end of Phoenix next to Jack’s Board Shop. We’ll announce here and through our other channels on Facebook and Twitter if we’re going to be there this Sunday, May 16. And we’ll be back at the Ashland market next Tuesday and every Tuesday this season.

Here are some more photos from Artik’s opening day:

Here’s a little more about this week’s flavors (all organic):

  1. Vanilla Fudge Brownie – super chunky with lots of rich dark fudge brownie pieces set in a really good vanilla ice cream. All organic and the vanilla is also Fair Trade certified. We made the brownies with local Dagoba chocolate.
  2. Meyer Lemon with Candied Lemon Zest – when I asked my friends at Four Winds Citrus if they had any Meyer lemons still on the trees this time of year, I wasn’t expecting to get 250 pounds of them. But when you’re dealt lemons….make a lot of organic lemon ice cream! These lemons are sweet and smooth with almost orange colored juice. The result is a lemony ice cream without the sour hit. We candied the zest to add extra bits of lemony sweetness.
  3. Milagros Chocolate – one of two single origin chocolate flavors this week, Dagoba’s Milagros chocolate is made from cocoa grown in the tropical region of Yunga, Peru. The nuanced taste of the bananas, papaya, and orchids grown amongst the cacao come through. A smooth and rich ice cream.
  4. Conacado Chocolate – also made with locally-produced Dagoba chocolate, Conacado is made from the Conacado Cooperative’s forest grown cocoa (Dominican Republic). The cocoa’s earthy and deep flavor characteristics come through. Smooth and rich.
  5. Toasted Coconut Non-Dairy Ice Cream – This is a super creamy coconut milk-based vegan ice cream. If you like the coconut stuff you can buy in the store, be prepared for something much smoother and richer. We added freshly toasted bits of coconut and sweetened it all with raw blue agave syrup.  We do a non-dairy (vegan) flavor each week.
